That’s the swapping all done! After that I just run the sprite through an editing program to get the end result you see in the photosets! Like so! It can be a bit repetitive to open each sprite up and change the palette one by one, but I’m not sure yet if there’s a quicker way to do it (*ﾟｰﾟ)ゞ You only need to save the sprite, saving the palette is just in case you want to amend any mistakes or if you’re swapping multiple sprites for making a gif or something. Then cancel out of the colour table so you can save the sprite itself. Once you’re finished you can click Save on the colour table and stick it in the Palettes folder (the other files in there are from actual colour swaps, like the Blazblue or Guilty Gear ones) I cheated a bit and didn’t do Yu’s shoes since they don’t show up in the graphics I make, hehe (~￣▽￣)~ Voila! The change doesn’t save until you hit OK, so you can click around the character’s hair and mess with the colour picker until you find something that really fits.Īnd then you just have to do the same for the rest of it! Obviously the character’s clothes aren’t going to be exactly alike, so use your imagination to see what fits best where (stuff like Yu’s jacket being Chrom’s cape, in this instance they’re pretty similar so there’s no big liberties to be taken here). The picker will choose colours from things that are open in other windows, so what you want to do now is find the corresponding part of the character you’re swapping to (since it’s the light hair shade I’ve got selected I’m gonna want to find a light part of Chrom’s hair, highlighted above) and click on it. If you click on any of the squares (the light hair shade in this case) then a colour picker will open- your icon will change from a pointer to an eye dropper too, but my capture tool doesn’t pick it up. (some of the colours won’t even show up on certain sprites, I think because they’re the colours for props and such). It’s mostly just experimentation that’ll tell you what colour batch corresponds to what part of the sprite. Yu’s eyes have a light shade, dark shade, and outline for the sclera, and then a light shade, medium shade, and dark shade/outline for the iris’ and pupils.

Now click the sprite’s window again so it’s selected, go to Image in the toolbar at the top, then Mode>Color Table.Īnd this doohickey will pop up! You want to ignore that mass of pink squares (I think they’re kind of placeholders of sorts, not important at any rate) and focus on the colours at the bottom.Įach part of the sprite has anything from 2-5 levels of shading for example Yu’s skin has a light shade, medium shade, dark shade, and then the outline. It’s a good idea to zoom up close in this window as well. Then you want to hit open again and open up whoever you’re swapping the character to- in this case Mr. Once you’ve got it opened up it’s a good idea to zoom in for when you want to tackle the smaller areas like buttons and eyes- Ctrl+0 will do that easily for you. Pick out whatever sprite(s) you want to edit- for the swaps so far I’ve just been using the characters’ basic idle stance, but once you’ve got the hang of it it’s a snitch to edit the other sprites! So first of all you want to boot up Photoshop, click open, and get the sprite(s) in question- I’ve renamed and moved around some folders since I downloaded the rip, but I believe the original file would be called P4U_Complete_Character_Sprites.7z (‘Character Sprites’ in the pic above). I also use Paint.NET as usual for editing afterwards!
To make one I use: the sprites from P4 Arena (obligatory link to the entire rip), Photoshop (I use Adobe Photoshop CS2, idk if it’ll work for other versions but it seems likely it would!), and good quality pictures of whoever I’m palette swapping to (so preferably a picture that doesn’t have lots of lighting effects messing up the colours).

It’s pretty easy to do once you’ve gotten the hang of it! I’ve still got a ton of them in the burner so I can do a quick walkthrough on how to do one- someone requested Fire Emblem Awakening so it’s a Chrom palette for Yu this time round!
